Even at the age of 20, my mother was very shy. According to what she told me, she was a sheltered young woman, immature, gullible, and naïve.

She lived with her father. Her entire world consisted only of her home and the rest of her extended family: my wonderful abuelito (grandfather) Wilson Abraham Morales; his wife, Maria; and my aunt and uncle (my mother’s younger siblings), Titi (auntie) Flor and Tio (uncle) Vincente. Here in the United States, they would be called my half brother and half sister. In Puerto Rico, at least the Puerto Rico I know, they are brother and sister. One's siblings are one's siblings, no matter what."Half" things have no meaning.

Flor and Vincente's mother, Maria, is Grandfather's wife but not my mother's biological mother.

Dolores, Flor, and Vincente are all my grandfather's biological children. He also had another son, my Tio Samson. Samson and Dolores share the same parentage, Wilson Morales and abuela (my grandmother) Delilah Malvades.

In 1958, Delilah left Dolores and Samson with my abuelito, who, along with Maria, raised them.

According to Mom, in the years living with Wilson and Maria, both she and Samson were not happy.

They felt rejected. Unloved. Hurt. Alone.

Although Grandfather demonstrated love and affection for his children, his wife would become enraged, extremely angry, and hostile. She would throw fits and say hurtful things to them.

She was jealous of the attention Grandfather gave Dolores and Samson. Perhaps she was insecure. I think Maria felt threatened by Mom and Samson; afraid Grand-father loved them more than he loved her and her own children.

I believe Maria had such low self-esteem, she could not stand the idea of sharing Grandfather’s love and affection. Rather, she wanted it all for herself and her children.

As a result, she mistreated my mother and uncle.
